MEDICAL CANNABIS RECIPROCITY EXPANDED BY FIVE STATES:

Today, the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board announced the extension of reciprocity to medical cannabis patients and caregivers from Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia.

The additions increase the number of states whose medical cards or state-issued documents the District recognizes from 27 to 32. Patients and caregivers from these states may now visit any of the District’s seven (7) licensed dispensaries to purchase their medication.

Medical cannabis sales in Missouri and Virginia launched on Saturday, October 17. Minnesota and Oklahoma were previously under review by DC Health.

To qualify for reciprocity in DC, a jurisdiction must issue medical cannabis cards or state-issued documents as evidence of enrollment. Recognition of other states’ cards is not dependent on whether those states recognize DC patient or caregiver cards. Medical cannabis cards not issued by a state government are not valid.

DC reciprocity extends to the following states:

  • Alaska

  • Arizona

  • Arkansas

  • California

  • Colorado

  • Connecticut

  • Delaware

  • Florida

  • Georgia

  • Hawaii

  • Illinois

  • Iowa

  • Maine

  • Maryland

  • Massachusetts

  • Michigan

  • Minnesota

  • Missouri

  • Montana

  • Nevada

  • New Hampshire

  • New Jersey

  • New Mexico

  • New York

  • North Dakota

  • Ohio

  • Oklahoma

  • Oregon

  • Pennsylvania

  • Puerto Rico

  • Rhode Island

  • South Dakota

  • Utah

  • Vermont

  • Virginia

  • Washington

  • West Virginia

On October 1, 2020, the Fiscal Year 2021 Budget Support Emergency Amendment Act of 2020 authorized the transition of the District’s medical cannabis program from DC Health to the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA). The ABC Board oversees ABRA.
