Medical Cannabis and the Human Endocannabinoid System

The human endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of receptors spread throughout the body that helps regulate many vital functions, such as sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system responses.

Cannabinoids from cannabis, such as THC and CBD, interact with this system by binding to its receptors, which can help bring the body back into balance, or homeostasis.

The ECS's role in maintaining bodily homeostasis makes it a crucial target for medical cannabis.

For example, in conditions like fibromyalgia or irritable bowel syndrome, which may be related to ECS deficiencies, cannabis can help restore a balanced state. Understanding the ECS is essential for optimizing cannabis treatments and may lead to personalized medicine approaches in the future.
